Hideo Kojima made his announcement a few days ago on embarking on a new partnership with Sony PlayStation. My first thought was yes, HELL YES. In the light of all the press there is so much to discuss along with the curiosity of what could be a new library of games and endless possibilities. Clearly, the man is genius and completely fascinating. I wonder how he must feel given that fact he will have more creative freedom and room to grow. He is now free to create a new legacy for himself perhaps push new ideas into a new chapter in video game history? Hideo Kojima has been circulating the news since his departure from Konami and although we might not know every detail of both parties, we can all sense it didn’t end well. Part of me really doesn’t care for that side of things, I am more interested on how Hideo is feeling now with The Game Awards behind him along with his official announcement with Sony PlayStation and Kojima productions.
During The Game Awards I was hoping that I would finally meet Mr. Kojima, I had talked to Geoff Keighley about him finally introducing us as I missed my chance to meet him at last year’s Game Awards. I remember last year he walked in right before me with his entourage and he has incredible style and carried himself with an unquestionable stager. Unfortunately, I missed the chance to meet him so when this year’s award show happened I was hoping to finally meet him. During The Game Awards the audience and thousands all over the world watching were stunned when we all learned why Hideo Kojima had not attended the awards. In an industry where I see so many strive to bring a sense a unity and commodore (I want to believe THIS) everyone commended Geoff for calling out Konami’s actions against Hideo. Thinking back to this Hideo must have had much to process. I never heard Geoff speak the way he did that night, he was eloquent, clear, and respectful. He spoke from his heart and he made it clear to everyone watching that night that Konami had prevented Hideo Kojima from attending. According, to Reddit he answers to why he did what he did and why he said it.
– What led to your decision to announce the reason Kojima was unable to go? Has Konami contacted you about it? Has Kojima? And were there any repercussions for it?
“It just broke my heart that he couldn’t be with us – something had to be said. I didn’t tell anyone on the show team what I was going to say and it wasn’t rehearsed.”
The man has had one hell of a year, perhaps some level of stresses we could never comprehend with. I admire anyone who is willing to follow his or her dreams. I also love a comeback story and perhaps we can all take a moment to examine human resiliency of person who has been given wings again. I’m eager to see what he will do next, Hideo surprises are the best! My hope is that he and Del Toro will go on a LSD (not really) trip together and form what was. To finish were they left off, or in fact call PT practice and start from the beginning. Maybe he will start with new open world shooter and create the most uncomfortable female badass protagonist that will drive all the conservative feminists mad?! Perhaps, this opportunity will allow some indie games from the new studio? Smaller titles, but lots of them?? The idea of a factory of quirky, lucid, and entertaining creative games from Hideo Kojima would be like candy falling from the sky and it’s just fun to think about. What will happen is something that only time will only tell. I will keeping a close eye on the future of Kojima Productions, I am completely fascinated of all the possibilities and I wish him and his team nothing but the very best.
